Abstract
In today’s world, information is one of most important aspects of our daily lives. We could find virtually anything on the Internet easily by simply executing a search on a particular topic such as music, books, articles, etc., and without realizing it, we could be violating another person’s Intellectual Property rights. As opposed to plagiarism, which is the intentional act of copy one’s words or ideas and using them as your own, copying the works of others from the World Wide Web (WWW) leads to many questions as to how can we protect our Intellectual Property on peer-to-peer(P2P) networks.
This paper will focus on Intellectual Property piracy on P2P networks. The unauthorized sharing of copyrighted work (online piracy) has led to the massive distribution and exchange of valuable property. Copyright law has been challenged by the latest technological advancements such as digital and communication technology. This paper will define Intellectual Property and how the government protects it as well as how current copyright laws give certain rights to the original creator. Also, this paper will provide the pros and cons of using sharing file tools such as Ka Zaa and Bit Torrent, as both of these tools can download any file easily without any control leading many to lose value, which impacts our economy and our society. Finally, this paper will also discuss the proper way of using Intellectual Property to avoid violating Intellectual Property laws.
