Debate Assignment
The ability to analyze a problem/topic and present it in a persuasive manner is a great still to develop. The development of that ability is a main goal of this project. In addition, you will expand your knowledge on some important real world technology/ethical/societal issues, as well as learn how to work efficiently and effectively as a team. There will be 4 debates, with each debate consisting of teams of 6 to 8 students. Half of the team will represent the “pro” side of the issue and the other half of the team will present the “con” side of the issue.
This assignment will utilize research, teamwork, and communication skills. Each team will be responsible for finding and incorporating articles (minimum 8 per team) related to the issue being debated. Each team member is required to make several postings to the Debate Wiki on Blackboard. A wiki is similar to creating a webpage but the pages are collaborative.
Wikis are due at 7 AM on November 4, 2015. No late wikis will be accepted – no exceptions. The wiki is the documentation of your research for your debate.
You can find instructions for using the wiki feature on Blackboard at the following location
http://www.temple.edu/cybersociety/virtual_labs/wiki_lab.html
Oral Debate Format
The debate should last for 20-22 minutes. The format follows (Introduction, Rebuttal, and Conclusion)
Pro Side: 5 minute presentation
Con Side: 5 minute presentation
Rebuttal by the Pro Side: 3-5 minute presentation
Rebuttal by the Con side: 3-5 minute presentation
Conclusion: A 1 minute closing statement from each team summarizing the major points presented by their team. You should prepare for this debate as a team so the debate is organized and manageable. Please keep the debate civil!
Class Evaluation of Debate
Class members will independently develop a one page document, identifying the major points presented, vote for the “winner” of the debate, and give their rationale.
My Evaluation
I will evaluate the presentation of your research, how well you made your points, and rebutted the points presented by your opponents. During the debate, I expect you to reference the research and not just rely on opinions. Everyone in the debate will not necessarily receive the same grade.
Debates – Nov 16, Nov 17 (2 debates in lab), Nov 18
DEBATE TOPICS
Note: The PRO view is listed below which means you agree with the statement listed in the box; the CON view is the opposite side of the argument.
Debate Date Topic
Nov 16 Debate: Surveillance cameras should be allowed to monitor your every move in public.
Nov 18 Debate: The scanning, capturing, and storing of license plate data through the use of LPRs (license plate readers) should not be allowed

Nov 20 (in lab) Debate: The national security establishment should be allowed to mine personal data to detect potential threats.
Group Wiki Requirements
All wiki entries must be typed in using your individual accounts. You cannot post for other students. Using the wiki “home” page as a starting point, you will need to create 2 pages for your wiki using the following names:
Page 1 title: Arguments
Page 2 title: Citations
Page 1 (Arguments)
This page should include a minimum of 8 paragraphs. It is unlikely 8 paragraphs will be enough to adequately present your research, but that is the minimum. The team will use this page of the wiki to present arguments (research) to be used during the debate. You will include any ethical and/or societal issues, any possible technological issues, possible resolutions, and anything else you believe is pertinent to your case. Look at the sample wiki to get an idea of how the material should be presented.
Be sure to use APA in-text citations when necessary. You will also list these sources in the references page. For examples of how and when to use APA in-text citations, download the following document and read pages 4-6. http://www.temple.edu/writingctr/support-for-writers/documents/APA_Guide_Revised.pdf
Wiki Page Contributors: all members are required to post. If a member of the team does not post anything using his/her own Blackboard account, that student will not receive credit for this portion of the Wiki.
Page 2 (Citations)
Create a reference page for the entire project to show every article, book, and website used in your research. Do not just include the references from your in-text citations. Instead, reference any research you read that influenced the work presented within the arguments page. You must use proper APA citations. It is a good idea to utilize tools like citationmachine.net to create your citations. Keep in mind this is a major research project. It is not unusual to have over 10 to 15 sources of information.
Wiki Page Contributors: only one group member from the team is required to post – the grade for this section will be the same for each member so be sure your group members correctly complete this section. It should be one long (in order) list and not broken up by team member.
Other Requirements
You must include a navigation bar at the top of both pages of the wiki. The steps to create this navigation bar will be given in class. You will also be graded for presentation of your wiki. Be sure the font is consistent throughout and the wiki is clean and formatted in a presentable manner. It should go without saying, but spelling and grammar count. Deductions will be issued for sloppy work, so be sure someone on the team is responsible for reviewing all of the work to look for spelling and grammar errors.
Good luck and have fun with the debate. Be sure to contact your instructor with any questions that arise during the preparation process.
