1. Look at Joan Didion’s opening about the Santa Ana winds (I added a file) from Los Angeles Notebook.
Examine how she uses examples to support her points. What are the most interesting insights she brings to this piece? Why? What are the examples that work the best? Why? What about these examples make them stronger than other examples?

2. In the reading, “How Do You Know You Are in Love?” the author uses concrete examples to answer the abstract question.
Notice how he moves back and forth between perspectives using italics to attempt to formulate an answer to the question. Emulating this style, I’d like you to write in the same style an answer to a question you’ve formulated either about our theme question (Who Am I or Who Was I?) or about The Great Gatsby.
Work on crafting sentences, constructing a message, and using examples to support that message. Think about how the italics in some ways can serve as an in depth exploration of the examples.
