Choose three peer-reviewed research papers to critique from the journal Social Work Research. They must all have different methodologies, preferably quantitative, qualitative and mixed method, participatory action or single subject design. So for example the first one could be quantitative, the second mixed method or single subject design and the final one qualitative. Write a 2-4 page paper for each, APA format that critically appraises the study. Use the critical appraisal checklists (discussed in class) and refer to material covered in the textbook as well as material covered in class to summarize the study, discuss strengths, weaknesses and limitations of design and methodology of the study.
Articles should be from the social work literature in the library databases. Students can use a critical appraisal of research as outlined in the Csiernik text, (p.217-221) as well as templates for critiquing specific kinds of research online to look at what is useful to include in the critique. Look at the detailed description above and on Blackboard for information about what you should cover in these papers.
