Diane and Berline employ video and performance research methods as their best methods of doing research. They define the concept of popular culture which is a theatre process that deeply delves into specific communities to identify issues of concern as well as analyze current conditions that lead to certain situations. Through popular theatre one can identify the points of change and analyze how change happens or could happen hence contributing to the implied actions (Prentki& Selman, 2000, p.8).
In the text by Diane Conrad “Exploring Risky Youth Experiences: Popular Theatre as a Participatory, Performative Research Method,” Diane is very careful about the research he intends to find from his research. He just like Berline relies more on video and performance as his research methods. His main aim of choosing this methods is to find first-hand experience through participation which fascinates him. Diane employs popular research mainly because it forms an educative platform for ensuring that knowledge is transferred to the community. Through recording video tapes, he could keep a lot of information for the future referencing as well as have evidence to prove that his research was satisfactory.
Diane from an informal interview of a drama with small groups of students noted that students raised questions that tend to explain their beliefs as well as evaluate the aspects of their lived experiences. He found out that their behaviorwas determined by their rural environmenteven though they denied being victims of their environment rejecting the notion that they were at risk and that they chose their behavior thus determining their own risk.
Berline similarly explains the concept of popular theatre as a form of research. She applies her research methods in a native Aborigine community and attempts to bring to life the ills of society as it is depicted in these theatres. She applies the concept of participatory research in her study and analyses the various aspects of this form of research focusing on how it can be combined with popular culture in order to clearly illustrate the ills that are facing society.In this particular context, her study was on the group of the society that can be classified as being at risk. Prior to this work, she had studied communities that were located more inside the towns and thus wanted to study communities that were living in the outskirts of the society.
Popular culture can also be used as a performativity research method. Performance is generally viewed as a sufficiently working method of legitimate and ethical principal in ethnographic understanding. Recently performativity has been taken up as pedagogy by qualitative social researchers.During popular culture presentations, the individuals involved show their lives in a real time situations which provides great knowledge about their lives and their culture. It also works to portray the behaviour of the characters as it would be in the real life hence providing a pretty conclusive and satisfactory view of life as it is.
These two authors have successfully used these methods of research contrary to the most accepted methods that include the use of quantitative survey as well as traditional ethnography. These methods have proved to be very sufficient in their research.
