Outline of Leo Tolstoy “what is Art“
Thesis: In properly coining the definition of art, Tolstoy advices us to first and foremost perceive it as part of human nature. Art is a conduit through which men are able to connect with each other and hence transfer feelings and emotions from the artist to the viewer. Visual art is indeed different from speech in the sense that speech transfers the thoughts of the speaker whist art transfers the emotions (Harlan & Beuys 32). Art can thus be summed up as a means of union in the same feelings among people in a community and it is of vital importance to individual well-being and progress of humanity.
I. By its infections nature, men and women can be grateful for art for keeping in store their history through the varied forms of art and being able to share in the emotions and feelings of those that have past and of the individual himself.
II. Those who try to extinguish art or suppress it in any sense are but trying to deny the undeniable. Tolstoy argues that like the Christians, the strict Mohamedians and the Buddhist, it is ironical that they suppress that which they use frequently.
III. True art has an effect on all of us. The determining factors are the medium in which it is transferred and the power it has over individuals. Bad art can be viewed as art with little or no influence whilst good art will infect all with a particular emotion. Medium include language which may act as the barrier (Harlan &Beuys 76).

In order for us to truly enjoy the union of art and its beauty, we then must unchain ourselves from the perceptions that specific art is only for special social classes and from the holds of religion that judge art on the basis of the closeness it brings an individual to the worshiped supernatural being
