Generation Jobless Reflection
There is a seismic shift to what higher education used to offer in the past and what it offers graduates today. Essentially, there is no provision or guarantee that one who has gone through the education system to University level are secured a stable job. Unfortunately, there is no solution to this and governments globally are turning a blind eye to this problem. Similarly, higher institutions of learning keep educating and releasing more graduates into the job market that is not willing to absorb them. As well, a substantial number of graduates leave school without the knowledge of how the job market is and how exactly they will maneuver in the harsh jobless society. Additionally, nobody provides transparent solutions to the problem and graduates today are forced to take jobs that they are highly unqualified for (MacDonald, 2015).
The main problem according to the documentary is that higher institutions of learning are training people for jobs of the past, and the training methods are not up to date. Therefore, when the graduate leaves school, they are high in debt and cannot get a job that will help service this loan. As such, the graduate lives a life that is much different from what they had initially anticipated during their study. A college graduate interviewed in the documentary claims that a degree in Canada today is not much; everybody has one and today it is similar to what a high school certificate was years ago. Despite this, it is necessary to note that though compared to a high school certificate, the tuition to acquire higher education has skyrocketed. Therefore, for the debt is higher as 60% of students in Canada have debt totaling to 27,000 Canadian dollars per individual. Additionally, baby boomers are retiring later than is required, and this leaves the fresh graduates jobless. Baby boomers are those who were born between 1946 and 1964.
There is still the misconception that parents use to encourage their students that in case they manage to get a University Degree and do what is right, the reward shall be a comfortable middle-class life. However, the reality is not the truth. The job market keeps changing, and technology helps employers to reduce the amount of labor they may require. As such, there are fewer jobs in the field and those who leave with degrees even in specialized areas such as engineering are forced to work in low-level jobs such as construction. Primarily, this is due to the problem of education inflation. This means that there are too many people with similar skills that have flooded the job market and cannot all get chances for employment (Lindskoog, 2015).
Evidently, such a case study warrants some scrutiny in one’s situation regarding the nature of joblessness. Essentially, there are factors that over the years have led to the current predicament, and it is essential to look into for solutions that are outside the realm of formal employment. By so doing, the graduate does not go through higher education with the misconstrued belief that the world owes them a job once they are through. In addition, career education prior to joining higher institutions of learning should be provided in order to give the student meaning out of what they intend to study. The results from this would be more partnerships with the industries related to the student’s area of study; there would also be an activation of students who are no utilized by the labor market as they are in school; the students, in form of internships, to get a feel for the job market (Blanchflower & Freeman, 200). Finally, the graduates would be better prepared for the job market and have a general or a rough idea of what to expect once they have left formal school. Alternatively, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the youth could postpone getting into the job market and remain in school in order to acquire more specialized skills.
