BACKGROUND INFORMATION
It is true that many Middle East states remain politically torn and disadvantaged economically. At the moment, the region serves as a hotbed of the observed extremism fueling the Arab Spring. Amidst these political challenges, Iran comes up as an important player in a surprising role because of its stable power in a region of extreme instability (National Security Program 6). It is possible to postulate that the influence of the Iranian state on the region’s politics remains significant. For instance, the state is a significant power player in the current crisis in Syria.
