Grading Rubric:
The essential aspect of the assignment is demonstrating an understanding of the material culture methodology as outlined by Prown and elaborated upon by Steele. Further to that, we are looking for evidence that the student has engaged with the garment in an imaginative, personal way, and is beginning to see garments as artifacts of larger cultural patterns.
Points Criteria
13.5 -15 Organization: Paper follows a coherent structure, with a clear introduction and conclusion. Balance is achieved between description of garments/photographs and analysis.
Description: Clearly written, allows reader to picture the garments or photos in whole and in detail. Factual elements of the subject’s life are clear.
Analysis: The subject’s story is well placed within the context of course themes. Connections are drawn between particular garments/outfits/photos and concepts from class.
Questions: Interviews were conducted with thoughtfulness, foresight, and attention to important concepts.
Sourcing: Correct use of Chicago style citations, maximum three online sources, minimum one assigned reading.
12-13 Organization: Basic structure is present, may be too heavily skewed towards description.
Description: Basically intelligible, but reader may feel there are gaps in their understanding of the wardrobe or garments.
Analysis: Subject is understood to exist in social context, and course themes are touched upon, but engagement may be somewhat shallow.
Questions: Interviews were conducted with some attention to narrative and themes.
