Compare/contrast either Bambara’s “The Lesson,” OR Joyce’s “Araby” to examine the following issues: the movement from innocence to experience is both a gain and a loss. To what extent is it a gain, to what extent a loss?

1. Compare/contrast  either Bambara’s “The Lesson,” OR Joyce’s “Araby” to examine the following issues: the movement from innocence to experience is both a gain and a loss. To what extent is it a gain, to what extent a loss? And what is the nature and extent of the gain and/or loss?

2. Compare and contrast the protagonists of Fitzgerald’s “Winter Dreams” and Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown.” How are Brown and Dexter Green similar and how different? Look especially at how they handle their traumatic experiences and to what extent they are responsible for their fates.

3. Discuss ways in which the passivity of two characters from two different works contributes to their fate. You may use one of the stories we’ve read and discussed. The other should be D.H. Lawrence’s “The Horse-Dealer’s Daughter.”

4. Examine the theme of “conformity and rebellion” in at least two (but no more than three) works (they can all be ones we’ve read and discussed.) and consider the following in trying to shape your argument: Sometimes, the result of conformity is self-betrayal, retreat from challenge, and compromise of one kind or another and sometimes rebellion leads to defeat, despair, even death. Does conformity usually signal weakness or cowardice? Does rebellion reveal strength and independence of character? What is the purpose of the rebellions? Is conformity ever prudent and wise?

5. Analyze the significance of the setting of one of the works we’ve read, using the sample essay by Nancy Lager (coming to you as a handout) as your model.

6. Consider D.H. Lawrence’s “The Horse-Dealer’s Daughter” and Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Dog” and discuss what forces bring the couples in these stories together. Is it love, fate, desperation, all of these and other elements? This will be a comparison-contrast essay.

7. Choose a favorite character from anything we have read and do a thorough analysis of him or her. Your analysis should examine how the character’s nature, actions, desires, particular circumstances, motivations, and so on bear on what happens to him or her.
