WHITE PAPER DIRECTIONS
General
- Include your NAME and the ASSIGNMENT on the paper. Use no more than two single-spaced lines. Example:

If you want to include more information (e.g., name of the class, date, etc.), create a title page.
- PAGE NUMBERS are included.
- DOUBLE SPACED / TIMES NEW ROMAN, in 12 POINT font, and BLACK.
- MARGINS must be 1’’ on top, bottom, and sides.
- INDENT ONCE at the beginning of each paragraph; do not put extra spaces b/t paragraphs.
Content
The white papers should include:
- A description of the issue (30%) – Clearly describe the issues that your paper would cover; important terms should be defined, and do not address tangential issues.
- Relevant research findings (40%) – Based on (two or three) relevant academic sources, explain (two or three) critical research findings.
- Your recommendations (30%) – Express (two or three) informed recommendations.
Citation formats:
- Say “the author’s last name (year)”
Example: Shim (2012) stated …
- Say “(the author’s last name, year)” at the end of the sentence
Example: These police workplace climate factors impact on … (Shim, 2012).
- Give page numbers if you are directly quoting
Example: Shim (2012, p. 26) argued… or The relationship between … (Shim, 2012, p. 26).
- Two authors: (last name & last name, year).
Example: (Shim & Lee, 2012)
- Three or more authors: (last name et al., year)
Example: (Shim et al., 2012)
- Court cases must be italicized.
Example: Missouri v. Frye (2012)
- If a paragraph is entirely based on one source, cite once after the first sentence of a paragraph and once after the last sentence.
- Do not overly rely on internet sources.
- If you are using outside sources, provide a REFERENCE PAGE. Please look at any journal article’s reference page and mimic the style.
While writing, you also pay attention to the following:
- Do not use contractions, slang, abbreviations, first-person or second-person statements.
- Minimize the use of direct quotes (1 to 2 maximum).
- Paragraphs must be at least 3 sentences long and should not exceed ¾ of a page.
