For this of the work, students will critically examine the issue covering in the text (ex. Mass incarceration, over-policing, ect…) through recent (last 10 years) published works on the topic. While there should be a focus on the inclusion of scholars of color, you may also include criminologist from European / white culture. Five sources are required that address the issue you are studying (journals/books). A reviewing the sources, you will be better able to critique the primary author of your chosen book and offer a more informed perspective. This section will include a history of the topic, prevalence of the issue, background causes/ reason for issue, and how it affects black/ African Americans. The last part of the assignment is to briefly outline a crime policy based on at least one theoretical premise presented in the book. The main goal of his section is to highlight the possible means of controlling criminality/ deviance or the criminal justice issue presented in the text according to framework provided by the author. While you should discuss the authors’ suggestion toward this goal including offering a critique of the author’s position, students are develop a new/original policy, program, practice etc, to combat crime and/or delinquency or injustices in the administration of justice related to the author’s theoretical assumptions and principles. Although recommendations may be cited in the text, the policy proposal should be all your own. Be sure to explain your projected policy/ program in detail including.
1) scope of the proposal
2) target audience
3) program goals
4) how those goals will be achieved (means/tactics to be employed to achieve stated goals)
5) the ways in which you will evaluate the programs effectiveness
