Impacts of the Trans-Saharan Trade
Social Impacts
Circa 1594, a Portuguese Navigator reported that he had encountered Senegalese Traders who were proficient in the French Language (Hine et al., 2014). The impacts of the Caravan Trade, as the Trans-Saharan Trade is sometimes referred to, had resulted in deep cultural exchanges between the peoples of West Africa and the Outside world. Mansa Musa is reported to have brought a lot of magical fetishes to West Africa from the trade with Arabs during the Caravan Trade. The interaction of West African Cultures with Arabic cultures resulted in Arabic Literature and Language being incorporated in West African Languages. Interactions with Islam resulted in the religion gaining mass popularity with the West African tribes.
