Malcolm X left for Mecca advocating for full legal rights for African Americans “by any means necessary.” He returned advocating a brotherhood of humanity across races and ethnic groups after the experience of the haj, the pilgrimage to Mecca.
In contrast to the mysticism and emphasis on interiority of much religious experience, the haj is deeply social and its emphasis is exterior.
