For the reader it is easy to pass judgment on the reasoning Dante has used for the punishment of the different levels of hell. There are some that appear to not have done anything wrong and there are some for whom the punishment fits perfectly. The Simonists were buried head first with their feet exposed to fire. Simonists are guilty of selling religious favor, so in reality they are not selling much of anything; rather they are taking advantage of somebodies faith.
Today this does not seem like a big deal. You cannot flip through the channels on Sunday morning without seeing a televangelist asking for your money to help build another mega church or the passing of a donation plate at a local church. The individual who donates does so out of the goodness of their heart but at the same time they have a selfish motive in hoping that it is buying them favor with their god. To punish a pastor or clergyman for selling religious favor is silly they are in need of their patron’s money in order to keep the church open. To send clergymen to hell and bury him head first with their feet exposed to fire for assisting in the continued existence of your church seems circular in logic. Don’t sell religious favor or you’ll go to hell but if you don’t receive donation there will be no church to worship in so we will all go to hell.
In the time of Dante the church played a much larger role; the church was the center of the community in every way. In this time period selling religious influence was similar to political corruption of our times. Selling the churches influence meant much more the religious promises. Clergymen where held in higher regard by those in charge and this gave the power and influence; today we do our best to separate the church and state but in Dante’s time there was no separation. One could see why Dante would look down on Simonists so much especially if you look at the fate that was bestowed upon him. He was removed from his homeland and never allowed to return because of religious disagreements with the religious/political party in charge.
To condemn Dante’s choices on who deserves to be punished and how they deserved to be punished is unfair. If each person were to describe hell and how it is organized and dole out the punishment our personal ideals would get involved and affect our description. Personal experiences always influence your actions and Dante was no different then you or me in that way.
