As part of this class you have read John Keegan’s analysis of both the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and The Somme in 1916. Both chapters from his book analyze both the social and military aspects of these battles.
In this paper you will basically compare these two battles, how warfare changed over this century, and what those changes reflect about the larger societies of Western Europe, particularly Britain and France in this case.
Review both articles and any notes that you may have taken. Read the textbook chapters on the First World War and Napoleonic campaigns. Then sit down and think about the major changes that
occurred in battle over the century in between these two events. What did not change? Are the soldier’s experiences of fighting different? Better? Worse? In what ways? How did these participants feel about what they were doing and their experiences? Has technology gotten more efficient and effective? Or not? Was that good for soldiers or not? What do these new types of warfare reflect about the changes in these societies? This is what I wish you to tell me in your paper.
