The main purpose of this task is to help students identify and understand their strengths and weaknesses by applying four tests which are Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Big Five Personality Test, the McDonald and Gandz Values and Commitment Survey and the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). Each of these tests above will be discussed in details with an analysis of my results. These results will help me to keep up my strengths and try to improve points of weakness in order sharpen my personality and behavior when dealing with others either in an organizational or personal scale.
Biography
My name is Muteb and I was born in 1985 in Riyadh which is the capital of Saudi Arabia. I spent most of my life in Riyadh with my family that consist of seven siblings. I was an ordinary student during my studying. I always like math and any related subjects where I achieve good grades in it; however, I do not prefer theoretical subjects. After completing my bachelor degree, I joined Saudi Arabian monetary agency (SAMA) which is Saudi Arabia Central Bank. Since I am good in my field which is finance, I was offered a scholarship by SAMA to complete my master degree in financial analysis. Now, I have lived in Australia for approximately two years one of which was at Latrobe English school and I am in my way to achieve my goal which is finishing my master degree.
Analysis:
Personality can be defined as “a dynamic concept describing the growth and development of a person’s whole psychological system”, and also it can be defined as “The sum total of ways in which an individual reacts to and interacts with others” (Robbins, S.P and Judge, T. A. 2012, p. 154).
In order to analyze my personality, three test will be conducted which are Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Big Five Personality Test and Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test. Also there will be an analysis of Individual and Organizational values and organizational commitment by taking The McDonald and Gandz Values and Commitment Survey.
1- The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI):
Myers’s theory is a development of the Jung’s theory of personality. It is suggested by Mayer that there are sixteen kind of people personalities which are classified by strengths and potential strengths. Preference is considered as the main aspect of this test which is defined as how a person feel natural and comfortable with things. Also, an assumption in this theory that each person behave to others whit their own preference and this preference is classified under four categories.
Extraversion (E) and Introversion (I)
Sensing (S) and Intuition (N)
Thinking (T) and Feeling (F)
Judging (J) and Perceiving (P)
After MBTI test is conducted the result will be shown as form of combination letters from the above table that represent a person type of personality (Bayne, R. 1995)
MBTI Results: See Appendix 1
E N T J
11% 12% 12% 11%
After I made the test, I got a result of ENTJ which stand for Extraversion, Intuition, Thinking and Judging.“For ENTJs the driving force in their lives is their need to analyze and bring into logical order the outer world of events, people, and things. ENTJs are natural leaders who build conceptual models that serve as plans for strategic action. Intuition orients their thinking to the future and gives their thinking an abstract quality. ENTJs will actively pursue and direct others in the pursuit of the goals they have set, and they prefer a world that is structured and organized” (Baker, R. L. 2004, p. 159)
By comparing my personality characteristics with the above results, I can see that it mostly matches who I am. In both personal and organizational life, I am always clear, serious and take responsibility without hesitation to make me and people who are around me in a better situation. Furthermore, in my workplace, there were some issues that I noticed which have a potential to improve. For instance, the department I work in use a long process to evaluate how banking sector implement some regulations of SAMA. Therefore, I was a member and the representative of a committee formed by the director of banking inspection department consist of our department, SAMA’s IT and directors of IT in commercial banks to discuss how to reduce the time required in sending and receiving, process and implementing SAMA’s decision. As a result, a new process were adapted that minimized the old process to half.
2- The Big Five Personality Test (Five Factor Model (FFM)):
The five factor personality model can be defined as hierarchy traits in personality in terms of five basic dimensions. These dimensions are Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism (Mccrae, R. R. & John, O. P. 1992).
The big five personality test was created and validated by different psychologist researchers such as Norman 1963, McCrae & Costa 1990, Brand & Egan 1989, Goldman 1990 and Sinclair 1992 (Mccrae, R. R. & John, O. P. 1992).
The five basic dimensions:
1) Openness to experience:
A person interests are measured with this scale where high score represents openness to experience, curiosity, complexity, and creativity. Whereas, low score represents a person with limited interest, less creative and traditional (Robbins, S.P and Judge, T. A. 2012).
2) Conscientiousness:
It measures how a person is reliable. To illustrate, a person with high score is organized, dependable, responsible and persistent. On the other hand, low score person is disorganized, undependable, negligent and unreliable (Robbins, S.P and Judge, T. A. 2012).
3) Extraversion
Extraversion measures how comfort is a person with his or her relationships. Extraverted people tend to be social, gregarious, and assertive. On the other hand, introverted person tend to be quiet, reserved and timed (Robbins, S.P and Judge, T. A. 2012).
4) Agreeableness:
The level of agreeableness could be explained as how a person behave with others. When the scores are high, it means that a person is trusting, warm and cooperative. In contrast, low scores means that a person tend to be antagonistic, disagreeable, and cold (Robbins, S.P and Judge, T. A. 2012).
5) Neuroticism:
It examines how a person can handle stress. A person with high score is more likely to be nervous, worrying, insecure and depressed. In contrast, a person with low score tend to be relaxed, calm, secure and self-confident (Robbins, S.P and Judge, T. A. 2012).
The Big Five Personality Test Results: See Appendix 2
In this section my results of the big five personality test on each dimensions are shown below.
• Openness to experience
My score fall in the 24 percentile which shows that I prefer to keep things as it is and do not like things to change with a result of making me a conventional person. I think that the result dose not accurately reflect my personality as I am a creative and curious person. I think I fall above the 60th percentile. For example, I always like to keep updated with new technologies and discover what the latest trends are and how to apply it in my life. Design has been always my favorite hoppy and I was able to apply it with renovate our family house. I helped them to change their conventional style with a modern style which they liked.
• Conscientiousness
In this criteria, my score fall in the 74th percentile which means that I am a well-organized and reliable person. This dimension reflects who I really am, in fact I was raised in a well-organized environment where I am used to do all my duties on time with a good quality. This habit has a big effect on my life in a positive way and helped me to cope with all challenges. For example, I always plan my schedules one month ahead, where I put my duties in order in terms of its priority and how it is urgent.
• Extraversion
My score is in the 42th percentile which means that I am neither particularly social nor reserved. I partly agree with this result where it does not clearly represent my relation with others in real life. In reality, I may know a lot of people but it does not mean that I do involve with them in their activities. I try to make my friends circle to be diversified with different cultures and traditions.
• Agreeableness
I fall in the 79th percentile in agreeableness which represents that getting along with others is important to me and I blend in with people around me and also, I believe that people are generally honest and trustworthy. This indicator has shown an accurate result on what I believe and behave; however, sympathy is a component of agreeableness and it is good to note that I am not a sympathetic person when making decisions and dealing with others.
• Neuroticism
Neuroticism is an indicator of nervousness and anxiety. My results is in the 71th percentile range and tells me that I am a nervous and anxious person. I found that these results are true because I always worry about the implications of what I did and what I will do in the future. For instance, my first year at Latrobe University was a challenging, where I took four financial subjects in the second semester that are important in the field of finance and I had to master it. I was always worried about how I could fully understand these subjects and achieve high grades. Therefore, I tried to control my nervousness and anxiety in a positive way so it would not affect my performance and that led to finish all subjects with high grades.
3- The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT)
This test is conducted to measure the participant emotional intelligence ability. It consists of two parts, the first one is emotions which can be defined as a person reaction and feeling toward imagined or real relationship. The second part is intelligence that can be defined as how a person can be able to reason validly about something (Mayer, J. D. & Salovey, P. 2007).
MSCEIT Results: See Appendix 3
Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) score 114
The score I got fall in between 65 and 130, which means that I have an average Emotional intelligence score. I am not satisfied with this test results because I find it easy to manage others and always find an acceptance from the people I managed. Therefore, I think that this test dos not show or reflect an accurate results.
4- The McDonald and Gandz Values and Commitment Survey (Individual and
Organizational values and organizational commitment)
Individual values can be defined as a set of conducts that are reflected on how a person make judgments and it varies from person over others. Values can be represented as good or bad depending on the personal or social preferences. The values considered important due to making us understanding what motivate people and also to understand their attitude (Robbins, S.P and Judge, T. A. 2014).
Individual and organizational values contain three factors which are humanity, vison and conservatism values. Humanity and vision values are mostly related on developing team skills, innovationand self-directive behavior. The conservatism values contains ways to avoid conflicts and also meeting social expectation in both personal and organizational life (Lawrence, A. & Lawrence, P. 2009).
