This research systematically reviews all the prospective cohort studies that have analysed the relationship between adherence to a Mediterranean diet, mortality and incidence of chronic diseases in a primary prevention setting. Twelve studies were carried out with the duration of follow up of reviews in the period of three to 18 years. Among the 12 studies, eight studies confirmed that Mediterranean diet is associated with a significant improvement in health status, as seen by a significant reduction in: overall mortality from CVD (9%), incidence of mortality from cancer (6%) and incidence of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s diseases (13%). These results are particularly encouraging that Mediterranean-like dietary pattern is possibly the primary protective factor from major chronic lifestyle diseases.
