A Perfect Day for Bananafish
In the story, “A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” by J. D. Salinger, we find Seymour narrating to Sybil a story about a fictional creatures he calls Bananafish. These fictional creatures are indeed metaphorical as they allude to a much deeper meaning. Bananafish are considered as imaginary creatures they indulge themselves in bananas until they suffer from banana fever and consequently die. This is metaphorical of Seyamor and his efforts in attempting to realign with current society after serving for his country, a society that is full of materialism, greed, and pettiness.
The war was made a psychological damage on the war veteran who is serving an early release form the military hospital. He fails to find a real outlet to vent off his complicated emotions that he has derived from the war and continues to carry on with them. Muriel and the family cannot understand his needs as they seem distanced from his needs and thus his behavior ends up being considered as inappropriate, disturbing, and dangerous. This leads him to find solace in Sybil and other children who end up revealing his unfortunate hanker for innocence and clarity, emotional dispositions that have no means of expression in the adult world. In just the same way that bananafish end up being too fat to leave their holes, Seymor is full of emotional pain that he cannot relieve. In eth end, just like the bananafish, he ends up dying from this.
The bananafish are also metaphorical for the materialistic consumer mentality of post-WWII American society. This society has adopted a consumerist behavior whereby it indulges and consumes almost anything and everything that is available in the market. In the end, just like the bananafish, the consumerist culture will end up killing the human civilization, as it will lead to a depletion of the finite resources that support humankind’s survival and the entire ecosystem.
