Poetic Realism
Realism in poetry is an expression of the world without distortion of the truth. Poetic realism represents everyday life in its crude form. The attitude does not idealize perspectives but it is objective in showing the social view of life. Romanticism on the other hand, is an expression in poetry that presents society, as the heart desires it to be. This attitude is sensual and focuses on emotion rather than logic. Sentimentality in poetry focuses on the themes of love and romance. Like romanticism, the attitude is sensual and creates an aura of love. In his poems, Robert Frost describes aspects of reality without fusing them with idealistic notions. His logic overpowers emotions that are hardly conveyed in the poet’s works. Robert Frost represents the attitude of realism in his poems.
Robert Frost faithfully gives a representation of life. In his poem, Out Out, he describes a boy’s snakebite experience that led to his sudden death. The author shows a normal perception of reality through the persona. In the last two lines, the persona describes, ‘and they, since they were not dead, turned to their affairs’. The tone used is cold and hardly shows the poet’s emotion. In his poem, Good-Bye and Keep Cold, the poet describes the plight of an orchard that is about to be left in winter’s harsh weather. He represents reality by affirming the inability of animals to respond to the orchard’s plea. The persona says, ‘if its certain it wouldn’t be idle to call, I would summon grouse, rabbit and dear to the wall’. The poet’s logic does not allow him to create an idealistic world regardless of the persona’s desire to protect the orchard. The poet’s diction is natural and everyday language. In his poem, Fire and Ice, the poet uses words like fire, ice, desire, hate and world to communicate his theme.
O Pioneers! By Willa Cather
The ending of the book, O Pioneers!, represents both themes of tragedy and romance. In the plot, Cather represents tragedy through the death of two lovers, Emil and Marie. Marie’s husband is also taken to prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. Alexandra’s brothers are also brought out to be unsettled because of their sister’s marriage to Carl. These characters are not at peace. However, the author manages to bring out a serene tone through Alexandra and Carl. As they book ends, they consummate their love in marriage.
The character’s dearth of peace is a result of their actions. In their death, Emil and Marie are not able to share in the joy of their love. Death in itself is an end to hope for peace. The two characters repeatedly denied their love for each other. When they gathered courage to confess their desired to one another, fate would not allow them to enjoy their love because their lives were brought to an end. Frank Shabata contributed to his distress by killing his wife and Emil. In the prison, he is seen to be bedraggled and denied the freedom of speech.
Alexandria and Carl deserve the peace that they experienced at the end of the book. In the plot of the story, their love was not allowed to blossom because of the jealousy that Alexandria’s brother experienced. The brothers accused Carl of wanting to exhort wealth from their sister. This then made Carl to move from Nebraska to Alaska. He forfeited his love for Alexandra in order to maintain harmony in the Bergson’s family. The satisfaction of these two characters was put on hold for the benefit of other characters. Their selflessness is the basis for the justification of their serenity.
