‘Susanna and the Elders’1564 by Jan Massys
The composition
The composition of the painting used is an illustration of purity as the writer tries to communicate to the audience. The colors in the skies are used remarkably to illustrate a dark period for Susanna. The fingers of all the people in the painting are a horizontal angle. The houses and the windows are made of horizontal and vertical lines. The furniture in the painting has also horizontal and vertical lines included. The fingers of Susanna pointing in both horizontal and diagonal directions are used to bring out a certain meaning. The overall color used by the artist is rich to show that the artist has deep knowledge and appreciation for art such that different colors illustrate different situations. The windows and intricate designs of the house depicted by rectangles and squares are spread out in the vicinity to illustrate the architectural heritage of the period and of the artist.
The picture space
The picture has a deep and vast space that allows one to focus on two elements, Susanna, the elders and the two servants and to focus on the surroundings of the venue. The picture has high horizon that depicts the need for freedom by Susanna to escape from the wickedness of the two elders. The picture has an intricate design that allows one to vie the picture horizon, which is attractive. The openness of the sky in the horizon is different from the color of the surrounding sky. This can be used to represent the need for freedom form the situation by Susanna. Susanna is placed on a higher platform while sitting down in comparison to the servants who are running after receiving instructions from their mistress.
The color
The colors in the painting are use by the artist differently to bring out different issues in the painting. The color of the trees and the skies are identical by their dark color. The color of the female servants and Susanna are identical but different from the color of the two elders. The color green is dominant on the furniture and the roofing of the houses in the vicinity. The color of the women in the painting could be described based on their races as white. In addition, the color of the coat worn by one of the elders is a deep red. The color of Susanna’s robe is golden which could be used to resemble the wife of a rich and affluent man. In addition, it could resemble righteousness of the individual. The color red on the elder is a sexual color, which is used to signify promiscuity and danger that Susanna should get away from the two men. The colors of the sky illustrate a dark period for Susanna but there is hope as shown by the presence of a shiny patch in the sky that Susanna could prevail over her tribulations.
The lighting
Susanna’s skin is very bright as it I used to illustrate a pure heart, outstanding beauty and a pure mind that is devoid of any immorality. The color surrounding the orchard tree from where the tow men are hiding in view of Susanna is the darkest and is used to represent dark hearts and immorality. The light in the image is diffused from all over because different sections in the painting have bright light such as Susanna’s body and hers servants, the vicinity. The statue that is in the background behind one of the sitting tablets is dark as it is hidden from the light of the painting. However, this has some significance as it is might be used to emphasize focus on the people in the painting. The complexion of the elder men could be used to illustrate dark hearts in comparison to Susanna and her servant’s color as they contemplate to commit a heinous act against her. The presence of open spaces in the city beyond the orchard could be an illustration of the freedom whereas Susanna has been held in bondage by her situation requiring her to commit a sin or face humiliations and eventually death.
In conclusion, different colors used by the artist are strong as they are used to bring out different themes by the artist. The painter has illustrated the aspect of hiding by one of the elders who is only visible by the head as the rest of his body is clearly invisible. The horizon is bright yellow but is surrounded by dark green and black colors to illustrate a dark period. This has significance as Susanna is bound to prevail over tribulations, which relates to the light in the horizon that is bound to break the existing dark clouded sky. The painting of Susanna herself is outstanding due to her remarkable beauty and bright complexion is a clear illustration of purity both physical and internal. It is an overall magnificent piece of art as it reflects the deep m rooted evil in society among people considered to be social elites. The use of deep colors is used remarkably to illustrate different societal themes such as purity depicted by the complexion of Susanna, sexual immorality shown by the red color on one of the elders, injustices.
