The modification of the American healthcare system has received worlwide attention. The healthcare reform is the most significant and far-reaching subject in the healthcare sector. The hallmark aspect of this subject encourages the American government to respond to various issues affecting the healthcare system (Hoffman, 2008). To Hoffman, the American government has identified concerns about cost, quality, and access to the current health care system. It is indisputable that, the three concepts (cost, access, and quality) are important with regard to healthcare services that people receive. For any healthcare service provided, cost is an important factor that determines where and how an individual receive healthcare. Most people require an appropriate, fair, and reasonable health care. When these concepts are applied to the nation, the government is in a better position to reform health care system. Another aspect that has gained attention is the concept of access. The availability of healthcare services is important as it reduces mortality rate. The American government has worked hard to provide its citizens more access to health care at an affordable cost. As discussed in this paper, the American government has played a major role in financing, directing, and planning healthcare services.

The current health care system in America is a potent illustration of market failures that require government intervention. The first core problem affecting the American health care is access to health care. Studies assert that, over 47 million people that die in the United States lack health insurance (Naylor et al, 2011). People without health insurance lack access to healthcare and as a result, they suffer. The residents of rural areas, low-income people, and minorities lack access to health care. The high cost of medication has affected most people in the United States. With this, the government has worked hard to reduce the cost of health care. Studies show that, the American health care system is often uncoordinated and highly fragmented especially to people with chronic illnesses (Rushefsky, 2010).  A study by Rushefsky (2010) reveals that, the United States ranks the lowest among other industrial nations in measures to access, equity, quality, and efficiency. With these concerns, different proposals have been made from different political parties to augment change in the U.S. healthcare system.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Act implemented in 2010 by President Barrack Obama, the country has established various programs and services to reduce health cost and improve quality care. The programs have helped patients with chronic conditions. In brief, ObamaCare has improved quality care to most Americans by raising standards of health care coverage. The policy has also eliminated pre-existing aspects of discrimination. The middle-income and low-income have access to quality medical care through programs such as Medicaid. The ObamaCare has ensured that health care is available to any American citizen who cannot obtain or afford quality healthcare.

The Republican Party in the United States has voted collectively against implementing the ObamaCare. The Republican Party believes that, the ObamaCare would increase taxes for everyone. The majority of Republicans believe that the Obama care would increase the cost of living (Naylor et al, 2011). The Party emphasizes that the country should not increase taxes in an attempt to make health care affordable. Instead, every individual should pay for his or her health cost. The policy has been criticized of being the most expensive by far and thus, not being effective in reforming the health care systems in the United States.

Although the ObamaCare has been criticized by the Republican Party, its importance in improving quality healthcare cannot be underestimated. From Rushefsky (2010) perspective, the key elements required to enhance the required change in the health care sector are, improving quality care, making the health care affordable, and accessible. Based on these findings, it is unquestionable that the ObamaCare has been on the lead to solve the current needs in the health care sector.
