Reflection
Review the Applications Assignments from Weeks 4 and 5, in which you engaged students in mathematical tasks and then evaluated the effects on student learning. Select one of these Assignments to be the focus of this Reflection. In light of what you determined to be the appropriate “next steps” in instruction and to further develop students’ conceptual understanding and address misconceptions, conduct a follow-up activity to extend student learning.
- Use student work samples from the original task to determine the important mathematical ideas that students seem to be struggling with in the task.
- Develop and implement a learning activity to address these needs and to provide the opportunity for students to develop conceptual understanding.
- Consider ways to incorporate one or more technology tools to further engage learners and enhance the learning activity.
- During and after implementation, collect data about student learning (e.g., student work, observational notes).
- Reflect on the results of your learning activity. Determine the extent to which students’ conceptual knowledge, skills, understandings, and performance have increased as a result of your targeted instruction.
- Based on your experiences in learning and teaching measurement and geometry in this course, in what areas have you grown professionally and in what areas do you still need to develop as a teacher and a learner of mathematics? How will you change the way you teach measurement and geometry concepts to further promote conceptual understanding and to encourage students to use estimation? What do you expect to be the benefits to your students?
- Submit a written reflection in two parts:
- Part 1: Reflection on Learning Activity Implementation
Describe the strategies and tools you used during the learning activity, and explain the extent to which students’ conceptual knowledge, skills, understandings, and performance increased as a result of your targeted instruction. As an appendix to your Reflection, include the student work samples you reference. Be sure that you do not include any names on student work. - Part 2: Reflection on Professional Learning and Growth
Based on the measurement and geometry concepts and strategies you have explored in this course, explain areas in which you have grown professionally and the areas in which you still need to develop as both a teacher and learner of mathematics. Include an explanation of how you will change the way you teach measurement and geometry concepts to further promote conceptual understanding and to encourage students to use estimation. Specify how you expect these changes would benefit your students.
