Unfortunately, petroleum is a finite resource; it was formed millions of years ago and cannot be reproduced synthetically by humans. This has serious implications for human systems, because modern life would grind to a halt without petroleum. No universal substitute currently exists. Many individuals believe that oil supplies already show signs of depletion.
