Topic: Great Depression
President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his administration enacted innovative and comprehensive legislation to combat the crippling effects of the Great Depression. Their strategy centered on finding ways to create gainful employment for people where they did not produce goods to avoid increasing an already overburdened supply. In response, Roosevelt created work programs for people to gain an income through contributing to the countries’ development in sectors that spanned economics, agriculture, art, home economics, and conservation.
As part of the Work Progress Administration (WPA), the Federal Writers Project (FWP) interviewed the last generation of former slaves about their experiences. For the first time, this population of Americans has the opportunity to discuss their experiences and the plight they endured in unencumbered ways. This collection of first-hand accounts are housed in the Library of Congress and digitized for public access. Part of the collection is linked below.
Post 1: Using information from the course textbook and the documents below, discuss the social, political, and cultural impacts of the creation of the slave narratives during the Great Depression. Analyze some common themes throughout the narratives and explain their significance. Talk about the importance of the narratives in the time of their creation (1930s) and today.
