ESSAY: THE NEEDS OF THE VICTIMS AND COMMUNITIES AFTER MASS VIOLENCE

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
In this assignment, you will apply the learning material in a meaningful way to clarify your
understanding of how restorative justice can meet the needs of both the victims and the
community after a mass violence incident. While there is no universally accepted definition of
mass violence, most definitions of such an event in the United States, typically requires that there
be at least three or four victims in the mass violence incident, not including the perpetrator. In
the United States, incidents of mass violence typically involve firearms, which is commonly
referred to as a mass shooting. However, in the United States and abroad, incidents of mass
violence can and have involved the use of explosives, knives, airplanes and motor vehicles.
Incidents of mass violence can have a negative impact not just on the victim, but on communities
as well.

INSTRUCTIONS
Your essay seeks to have you examine what ways restorative justice is being implemented in
addressing the needs of victims and communities after a mass violence incident. Discuss the
specific ways in how trauma can manifest itself within the victims and the community after an
act of mass violence. Identify how truth and reconciliation commissions are used to address acts
of mass violence, and their effectiveness.

How do some of these changes continue to manifest today?

The assignment instructions were:
Assignment In essay format, provide well-developed responses to the following questions:
How have security threats been treated historically, in the U.S.? Give examples to explain your claims.
Next, consider that catastrophic events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina have caused significant changes to security policies.
How did these events and their consequent impacts on public policy affect intergovernmental relations across the U.S.?
How do some of these changes continue to manifest today?
Don’t provide separate answers to the questions. Instead, develop a unified essay based on a unique claim or observation that serves as your unifying idea – the main point, or thesis, of your essay. Use the questions to guide your thinking toward a thesis. Your answers to the questions should then function as supporting points for your thesis. In developing your answers to the questions, provide evidence or examples with explanations that support and refer to your essay’s main, unifying idea.
