Peer#2: The purpose of this discussion post is to examine my local health department, and its strengths and weaknesses. I live in Mahoning County, Ohio and our health department is located at 50 Westchester Drive in Youngstown, Ohio 44515, and they can be reached at 330-270-2855. While researching more about my local health department, I found that the mission of the Mahoning County Public Health Department is to protect and promote the health of the residents of Mahoning County and their communities (Mahoning County Public Health). The Mahoning County Health Department strives to achieve this by collaborating and educating these communities and their residents to help prevent disease and reduce disparities (Mahoning County Public Health). Additionally, I found that there have been eleven county health commissioners dating back to 1920 when the Mahoning County Public Health Department was founded (Mahoning County Public Health). The name of our current health commissioner is Ryan Tekac, M.S., R.S., R.E.H.S, and he started serving the Mahoning County in 2020 (Mahoning County Public Health). When scouring the website page and looking at the various services that are offered to my community, I was shocked by just how many services there were available. The Mahoning County Health Department offers services such as: Women, Infants, and Children, Mahoning Valley Pathways Hub to help connect woman to a health pregnancy, an environmental health division, and numerous nursing services such as Baby and Me Tobacco Free, Cribs for Kids, Community Health Education and Assessment, just to name a few (Mahoning County Public Health). The role of the community health nurse is to help promote disease prevention and promote a healthy lifestyle. In the Mahoning County, the community health nurse is focusing much of his or her time on the health promotion of expectant mothers and young children in the community. In addition to spending time with this population, the public health nurse is also able to offer services like immunizations for travel and assist with emergency preparedness when that strikes in the community (Mahoning County Public Health). In terms of emergency preparedness, the Mahoning County Public Health Department has a great emergency preparedness plan that was created in April of 2018. This plan is easily accessible through the health department’s website, and consists of preparation for situations like widespread disease and illnesses, dehydration, widespread injuries or trauma, and overwhelmed medical facilities (Mahoning County Public Health). In addition to this, the plan also talks about how this will be triggered in the start of an emergency, which is via either the health commissioner or the emergency preparedness coordinator (Mahoning County Public Health). The plan also goes on to elaborate on the different types of activation and are listed as routine operations, situation awareness and monitoring, partial activation, and full activation (Mahoning County Public Health). As previously stated, I was blown away by the amount of services that are offered in the Mahoning County to its residents. However, I did feel that one area that was lacking in was mental health services. This is such an important topic that many individuals often do not have the resources to get help with. Often times, there are physical health issues that patients present with that get them sent to a community health nurse, and on further investigation, the nurse finds that there are underlying mental health problems at hand as well (Palmer, 2023). In fact, many individuals will experience undiagnosed anxiety and depression, and even panic disorder and primary care physicians are finding that mental health issues in patients account for almost 40% of their time (Palmer, 2023). Having access to resources like these for more individuals can help to decrease the incidences of anxiety and depression. All in all, I learned quite a bit about the history, services, and resources that encompass the Mahoning County Health Department. I feel very fortunate because not all communities and counties in the United States have a local health department to depend on as our community does (Nies & McEwen, 2024).
