The Legal Topic Essay is an opportunity for you to explore a business related legal topic in greater detail with the goal of being able to explain the topic effectively to a lay person. Scenario: “I do not understand a particular legal issue. Explain it to me?” This is not a research paper per se, so what do I expect? Imagine for a moment that you have to explain a legal issue to someone who does not know anything about the subject. How would you explain the issue/topic effectively to them? There are a number of ways of approaching such a task, but you may want to first explain the basics of the issue to them, such as, from which law or laws does the issue arise. Second, you may want to place the legal issue in its historical and contemporary context. Third, you may want to address the different theoretical approaches, schools of thought, or debates, both pro and con, on the issue. Fourth, you may want to lend your personal interpretation and perspective. Finally, you may want to wrap it all together in a conclusion. And, at the end of the essay, if it is well written, the reader should have an educated understanding of the legal issue.
