Essays should respond to the following question: How did imperialism lead to the creation of what José Vasconcelos called “The Cosmic Race?” and do his ideas for the future of this race seem plausible?
Sub questions to consider: What do José Vasconcelos’ ideas of the “cosmic race” have to say about the racial ideologies at play in European practices of colonialism? What part might have early modern European attempts at imperialism have played in this?
At the end of your first paragraph, write a thesis sentence that is a direct answer to the above questions, and then use the rest of your paper to back up that statement.
Use specific examples from the course materials, including the lectures, textbook readings, and videos shown in class to provide context and supporting evidence for your argument. Note: you may find that you need to work ahead in the textbook to find the best supporting material, and that is okay.
No outside materials should be used for constructing your response. Any information included in your response that is not from the course materials will not be counted for credit.
I do, however, want to read your own thoughts and arguments – explain your answer to the above question, as well as your examples and how they support your argument. Note: I do not, though, want to read statements such as “I think,” “I believe,” et cetera. Leave the “I” out of it and assert your arguments as statements of fact.
The class materials that you use to construct your argument should be cited in Chicago style footnotes.
The point of this essay is to gauge how well you have synthesized the information that you have been given in this course. As such, the emphasis in grading will be on how you construct your response, rather than on writing technicalities. However, it is important that you do your best to compose your response in a clear manner as well-written responses always get their point across better than do poorly written responses.
